Research Highlight 1 Chaperoning CENP-A to the Centromere
Centromeres are chromatin regions that are central for chromosome segregation and are defined by the histone variant CENP-A in humans. Foltz and colleagues and Almouzni-Pettinotti and colleagues now report that the protein HJURP deposits CENP-A at the centromere and acts as a chaperone specific for CENP-A. Research Highlight 2 Detox with Sirtuin
Sirtuins are deacetylases that connect metabolism and aging. Guarente and colleagues report that mammalian SIRT5 deacetylates and activates a mitochondrial enzyme in the urea cycle, which is responsible for ammonium detoxification during fasting. This further strengthens the link between sirtuins and adaptation to food deprivation. Preview by Denu and colleagues.

Research Highlight 3 Dissecting Germ Cell Differentiation in a Dish
In mice, the germ cell lineage first emerges in the epiblast of the embryo and gives rise to primordial germ cells, which then differentiate into germ cells. Saitou and colleagues now dissect the signaling events of this process and use the insights to direct the differentiation of germline progenitors in vitro. Preview by Tam and Loebel.
